Learning environment in the metaverse

We are all indigenous people from some land.

The UCB METAVERSE LAB is a laboratory for technological, pedagogical and cultural innovation projects. We work at the technological frontier: a place where transformations are happening daily and where generative AI is transforming relationships with creative work. We preserve the values of human culture and language and use technology to enhance them.

360° VR Movie

360º VR film narrating an indigenous myth in the heart of the forest and the human mind. An immersive 360º VR experience in the heart of the Amazon. Our film tells the story of an ancestral myth of the Yawanawá people, an indigenous nation deeply connected to its origins, which will open the doors of the New Time, of the Ancestral University. The film is being made in alliance with the main leaders of the Mutum village, Chief Matsni Yawanawá and the young Chief Rasu Yawanawá, both dedicated to the spiritual knowledge of their people for many years, with the participation of the entire village.

Interaction in environments in the metaverse

Inspired by Florence Dravet’s Manifesto of the Ancestral Future, this project aims to create immersive experiences dedicated to the Pataxó, Yawanawá and Tukano ethnic groups, where the ancestral wisdom of these peoples can be experienced in a playful, interactive and accessible way. Through immersive virtual environments, participants can explore, learn and interact with ancestral cultures in a deep and meaningful way, promoting greater awareness and visibility of ancestral knowledge in digital contexts. This project values the importance of ancestral knowledge in building the future, promoting respect and appreciation for Brazil’s cultural diversity.

Dream Immersion - A Workshop in the Metaverse

We explore how immersive technologies and artificial intelligence can be used to create environments that explore the emerging aesthetics of artificial intelligence. Using Microsoft Copilot AI, participants generate images based on dream descriptions and display these creations in a virtual gallery in the open source metaverse OnCyber. The workshop culminates in a collective exhibition that transforms each participant’s dream experiences into an immersive environment.

We are all indigenous people from some land. An initial land. An initial word. If we have come this far, we certainly owe it to an ancestral, previous memory, unknown to us, our present.

Environment 1

Pataxó people: a worldview of deep connection with nature

The Pataxó metaverse is a vibrant and immersive digital representation of the culture and traditions of this people. Combining the rich tapestry of myths and traditional knowledge with advanced technologies, this virtual space serves as a portal to the Pataxó symbology. Here, visitors can come into contact with the ancient oral tradition of this ethnic group, listen to stories told by virtual characters and explore the exuberant cosmology inspired by the sea, the ancestral habitat of the Pataxó. This metaverse not only preserves cultural memory, but also fosters a deeper connection between the Pataxó culture and the digital future.

Yawanawá People: the symphony of light and knowledge

In the Yawanawá metaverse, technology intertwines with myth to create an environment where forest spirits and humans coexist harmoniously. This digital space is a celebration of Yawanawá cosmology, where visitors can experience oral tradition, sacred chants, and unique graphics that represent the Yawanawá people’s intrinsic connection with nature. Through interactive avatars, users can explore the vast, ancient wisdom of this people, fostering a deeper understanding of the universal value of Yawanawá culture.

Tukano People: the weaving of dreams and virtual realities

The Tukano Metaverse is a digital universe where dreams and reality merge to form a rich and diverse tapestry of immersive experiences. Inspired by the traditions of the Tukano, this space allows visitors to explore the intricate webs of mythological narratives that shape the Tukano people’s worldview. Users can navigate virtual rivers that replicate the Rio Negro and interact with guardian avatars, while learning about the complex symbolic systems that the Tukano have preserved for centuries.

Pedagogical innovation

Integration of technological means into the university reality and greater and better awareness of the technological phenomenon of immersion. Our time calls for education through experience: students and professors from undergraduate and graduate courses at the Catholic University of Brasília will experience the immersive workshop, the 360° VR film and the metaverse. An experience that is both mythical and technological.

Cultural impact

The Lab Metaverse UCB project directs its immersive experiences towards dialogues between traditional knowledge and technological knowledge, starting from the premise of the ancestral future, a meeting between the oldest ways of narrating and understanding the world and the newest immersive technologies.

Scientific impact

With each workshop, the project provides data that allows for observations, analyses, and conclusions that are significant for our objectives regarding immersion and its presence in higher education. It is necessary to anticipate the consequences and implications of the arrival of metaverse technologies in education. Such research provides scientists with the tools to reflect on consciousness.

Technological innovation

Web.3 and Metaverse technologies with integrated AI generate new forms of interactivity and allow us to expand the creative and poetic potential of students and future professionals in the hyperconnected society. Acting on the technological frontier where the new emerges, we anticipate the social, cultural and professional transformations to come.
